ALLAGASH TOPPING OFF CEREMONY

Allagash Brewing Company broke ground on their new facility in mid-October. Next Wednesday, December 20th at 2 pm, Allagash will host a topping off ceremony at the site of their new building at 50 Industrial Way in Portland.

A topping off ceremony, in which a tree is hoisted to the highest point of the building, is a Scandinavian tradition thought to bring good fortune to the construction project and to the owners of the building. Traditionally this ceremony takes place at a major point in the construction of a building, often as the last steel beam of the frame is put in place. It is a ceremony that honors both the work that has gone into the construction of the building and also the work that will take place within the building.

"We started in a small portion of our current building, which we’ve occupied for 12 years, now," says Rob Tod, the owner of Allagash Brewing. "We have been operating beyond capacity for the past year and this new building will give us much needed additional space and it will increase our efficiency. By constructing a new building we had the opportunity to select materials and come up with a design that is well suited for beer production. It is great to see the progress being made on the building and it is nice to celebrate all the hard work that has allowed this building to take shape."

Tod hopes that the brewery will be operational by March. He adds “We get a lot of fans of the beer coming to Portland, sometimes specifically to see our brewery and do a tasting of our products. With this new facility, they will be able to see a lot more of the actual production, which will be great. They will really be able to get a feel for the whole brewing process.”

The topping off ceremony is open to the public. It begins at 2 pm, Wednesday, December 20th at 50 Industrial Way, Portland.
