Means & Strategy

Sour Blonde Ale Aged on Muscadine Grapes

This sour ale aged on whole muscadine grapes is a collaboration between Allagash Brewing and Brockton Beer. Julian, Head Brewer at Brockton, had the idea to use this native grape—historically cultivated by enslaved laborers in the American south—to honor the history of Black winemakers in America. We sourced the grapes from Dr. Darlene Williams, owner of Roberts Vineyard, who specializes in cultivating muscadines.

Notes of concord grape, apricot, and plum fill this dry, and tart, blush-colored ale.

Tartness can be found in a wide variety of beers—and can be added to beers in a wide variety of ways. You’ll find sourness in beer from souring bacteria, from fresh fruit, and sometimes from wild microflora floating in the Maine air.
